We are pleased to exhibit Deborah Brown: The Shadow Paintings, Four Seasons in the Upper and Lower Galleries. Quarantined in East Williamsburg at the start of the pandemic, Brown took long walks with her dog Trout in her neighborhood. She noticed that “the landscape became a reflection of internal feelings heightened by the pandemic.” Images she began to photograph on her walks with Trout led to the artist’s Shadow Paintings.

Four Seasons is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s Shadow Paintings to date, encompassing some of the earliest works in the series and including one of her newest Haunted House paintings. From the elongated shadows of the low winter sun to the warm glow of summer nights, our exhibition tracks the change of seasons throughout Brown’s paintings.
