Sue Williams

“From being an angry feminist working on the front lines of the cultural wars in the 1980s and early ‘90s, Sue Williams began in the late ‘90s to create lyrical abstractions of barely recognizable forms. In ‘Tomatoes’ (2003) she ups the ante to heightened comedic effect as she casts assorted body parts as characters in a celebratory bacchanal. This work’s title references the bright hue chosen for these triumphant organs, and its jubilant character reflects Williams’ own happy turnaround in which she consciously decided to move from destructive relationships to life affirming ones.”
